It is 27 years since the St. Erth Concert Band appointed George Lawry as Musical Director. After many successful years with the band, he has decided to retire at the end of this year.
The Band is based in the village of St. Erth in West Cornwall and has a membership of thirty players, brass and woodwind with the youngest member eleven years old and some of the older members in their seventies. It is run by a Management Committee and has a Constitution and part of Item 2 is specifically about the aims and objectives of the Band. It states that “as an ensemble, to improve the standard and presentation of performances and to give regular public concerts, including support for charitable organisations”. The Band plays at many venues in West Cornwall and this year had a very successful day when making its first appearance at the Royal Cornwall Show at Wadebridge in June. We gave three performances with a different programme for each concert and there were people in the audience who enjoyed all three concerts. We play a variety of music and like to present programmes which include something for everyone.
Applicants for the post of Musical Director should have experience of working with a concert band and have appropriate qualifications. Good musicianship is essential and some knowledge of the concert band repertoire is required. Selected Candidates will be invited to attend an interview and will also be required to conduct the Band. This will be an opportunity for the candidates and the Band to meet each other.
Applications stating relevant qualifications and experience should be sent to Mrs. S. Yarwood, Band Secretary, 4 Lethlean Towans, Phillack, Hayle, TR27 5AP or e-mail sy@sylviayarwood,freeserve.co.uk
